Educational Reform for Enhancing Students' Higher-Order Thinking Skills: in the Andaman Region

Abstract

The objective is to develop students’ higher-order thinking competency in the Andaman area by the teaching model that emphasizes students’ higher-order thinking competency. The target group consists of elementary school students from schools under the Municipal Education Office in Phuket and Phang Nga provinces and schools under the Primary Educational Service Area Office in Phuket province, totaling 3 schools. The research uses the qualitative method of participant observation, which focuses on mutual observation, and the gathering of empirical data are the main goals of this methodology. It analyzes the data from the teaching protocol, photograph, observation, and the outcome obtained from student problem-solving. Data were analyzed according to the conceptual framework of Inprasitha (2023). The results revealed that the students’ higher-order thinking competency students demonstrated the development of higher-order thinking competencies, evidenced by their articulation of mathematical methods and concepts during problem-solving. This progressed until they recognized these approaches as their own into learning how to learn included (1) students extending their ideas by applying previously learned concepts or methods to new, unfamiliar, or more challenging problems in the next lesson; for example, students apply the concepts of marking grids and counting grids and use them to compare the size of flower bed areas, and (2) students integrating all of the ideas in the lesson or the previous lesson to solve the problems.
