Abstract
Research Title: The Integration of Language and Culture of the Chinese, Mon, and Burmese: A Case Study of the Panthang Drama “Rachathirat” (Episode: Saming Phra Ram Asa) aims to:
- analyze the integration of language and culture in the performance of the Panthang drama Rachathirat, particularly in the episode “Saming Phra Ram Asa”; and
- examine the forms of dialogue and singing that reflect the ethnic accents of Burmese, Mon, and Chinese characters in the Panthang drama Rachathirat, episode Saming Phra Ram Asa.
This study employs a qualitative research approach, collecting data from academic documents, dramatic scripts, and recorded performances of Panthang drama, as well as examining texts adapted from literary works and foreign chronicles related to Rachathirat. The analysis focuses on three ethnic character groups Burmese, Mon, and Chinese to investigate language use, accents, word choice, and the construction of character identity within a multicultural context.
The findings reveal that:
- Panthang drama demonstrates a systematic integration of language, with Thai serving as the central medium while incorporating modified accents, vocabulary, and dialogue styles reflecting the ethnic identities of the characters. This technique enhances dramatic realism and socio-cultural dimensions. Cultural integration is also evident in elements such as music, dance movements, costumes, and narrative structures, influenced by multiple traditions but adapted to align with Thai performing arts conventions.
- The study also indicates that Panthang drama shows awareness of vocal performance techniques, including singing, dialogue delivery, accent imitation, voice modulation, and the selection of expressions reflecting the ethnic identities portrayed. These techniques enhance authenticity and character depth, consistent with contemporary language learning approaches that emphasize language as a process of intercultural communication.
In conclusion, Panthang drama reflects the dynamic nature of the Thai language and its ability to creatively adopt and adapt external cultural influences. This study contributes to linguistics, cultural studies, and educational development, particularly in promoting awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity in a sustainable manner.
